The SPARK Framework: How Travel Coaching Actually Works

When people ask me what happens in a travel coaching session, I understand why they’re curious. Coaching can feel abstract until you experience it.

So let me walk you through it.

I use something I call the SPARK Framework. It’s a thoughtful approach designed to help you reconnect with what’s calling you and move toward travel with clarity and confidence.

This isn’t about rushing decisions. It’s about creating space, listening inward, and letting the right journey take shape.

Here’s how it works.

S: Set Your Intention

We begin by exploring why travel is calling you right now.

Not where you want to go. Not what kind of trip you should take. But why. What feels unfinished, ready, or quietly asking for attention in this chapter of your life?

This sets the emotional foundation for everything that follows.

What This Often Looks Like:

Sometimes people come to me saying they want to travel but don’t know where. When I ask why travel feels important right now, they pause. And then something deeper emerges.

“I think I’m trying to remember who I am outside of being a mom and a wife. My kids are older now. My marriage ended. I feel like I’ve spent decades taking care of everyone else, and I don’t even know what I want anymore.”

Or:

“I’m turning 50 this year and I keep thinking about all the things I said I’d do someday. I want to prove to myself that I’m brave enough to do them now.”

That’s the intention. Not a destination. A desire to reconnect, to prove something to yourself, to step into a new chapter.

Once we understand that, everything else becomes clearer. The person who needs to reconnect with herself doesn’t need a packed itinerary or a whirlwind tour. She needs space to be alone with her thoughts, to move at her own pace, to make choices based solely on what she wants.

Setting your intention isn’t about having the perfect answer. It’s about creating space to listen to what’s really calling you, even if it’s something you haven’t put into words yet.

P: Pause and Be Present

We slow things down.

You have space to reflect on what your life feels like today and what you need more of. What fills you up? What drains you? What’s missing? What feels out of balance?

This is where insight begins to emerge.

What This Often Looks Like:

Sometimes people say they want adventure and excitement, something completely different from their day-to-day life.

But when we pause and talk about what their daily life actually feels like, a different picture emerges. Days packed with back-to-back meetings. Barely time to eat lunch. Constantly responding to emails, managing crises, putting out fires.

When I ask what they need more of, the answer shifts: “Space. Silence. Time to think without anyone needing anything from me.”

That changes everything.

What they actually need isn’t adventure or excitement. It’s the opposite. They need a trip that feels calm, restorative, and quiet. A place where they can wake up without an alarm, sit with a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise, take long walks without checking their phone.

Pausing to be present helps you see what you actually need versus what you think you should want.

A: Allow the Unexpected

Together, we gently explore what might be possible if you release pressure and expectation.

We talk through fears, hesitations, and curiosity. We look at what’s holding you back and whether those barriers are real or stories you’ve been telling yourself.

This is where new ideas surface without forcing answers.

What This Often Looks Like:

Sometimes people are convinced they can’t travel solo because they’ve never even been to a restaurant alone.

“I’d feel so self-conscious. Everyone would be looking at me. They’d think I’m lonely or that something’s wrong with me.”

So we explore: “What if no one is actually looking at you? What if everyone is focused on their own lives and you’re completely free to just be?”

That pause often shifts something. “I never thought of it that way.”

We talk about how most of our fears are rooted in stories we’ve created, not in reality. We explore what it might feel like to sit at a café in Paris with a book and a glass of wine, watching people walk by, completely at ease in your own company.

Often, that realization emerges: “I actually think I’d love that. I think I’ve been afraid of something that might actually feel freeing.”

Allowing the unexpected means questioning the stories that keep you stuck and opening yourself to possibilities you hadn’t considered.

R: Rediscover Your Spark

We explore what lights you up and who you want to become through this journey.

Not just the places you want to see, but the version of yourself you want to meet along the way.

This is where travel shifts from an idea into a meaningful, personal experience that reflects who you’re becoming.

What This Often Looks Like:

Sometimes people come to coaching after a difficult divorce or major life change. They feel lost, unsure of themselves, disconnected from the confident person they used to be.

When I ask who they want to become through travel, they get quiet. Then something emerges:

“I want to feel brave again. I want to remember that I can do hard things. I want to prove to myself that I’m capable of more than I think I am.”

That becomes the North Star.

We talk about what kinds of experiences would help someone feel brave. Not reckless, but courageously stepping outside their comfort zone. Trying something they’ve never done before. Navigating a new place on their own. Making choices without consulting anyone else.

That might look like a solo trip to Africa. A safari where they can witness the power and resilience of nature. Guided experiences where they feel supported but still independent. Quiet evenings where they can reflect on how far they’ve come.

It’s not just about a vacation. It’s about creating a turning point.

Rediscovering your spark is about reconnecting with what makes you feel alive, vibrant, and fully yourself.

K: Keep It Alive

You leave with clarity and direction.

This may lead into full Travel Design with me, where I handle all the logistics and create your itinerary. Or it may simply give you confidence to move forward on your own.

Either way, you walk away more connected to yourself and what comes next.

What This Often Looks Like:

Some people leave coaching with a clear vision and book their trip within weeks. Others take months to plan. Some decide they’re not ready yet and return to coaching when the time feels right.

Sometimes someone realizes they’re not actually ready to travel yet. They have some things to work through first, some decisions to make about their life.

And that’s okay. That’s clarity too.

Then months later, they reach out again. “I’m ready now. Let’s plan that trip.”

Keeping it alive means honoring wherever you are in your journey. There’s no timeline, no pressure. Just clarity about what’s next for you.

What Happens in a Coaching Session

Travel coaching sessions are 60 minutes. We meet virtually, which means you can work with me from anywhere.

Some people find clarity in a single session. Others prefer a series of conversations as they explore different aspects of their travel vision. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. We’ll figure out what feels right for you.

Here’s what you can expect:

A calm, thoughtful space. This isn’t a high-pressure sales conversation. It’s a supportive space where you can think out loud, explore your questions, and work through what’s calling you.

Deep listening. I’m not here to tell you what to do. I’m here to listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, and help you find your own answers.

Honest conversation. We talk through fears, concerns, and hesitations without judgment. Everything you share stays between us, and there’s no question too small or worry too silly.

Clarity and direction. By the end of our session, you’ll have a clearer sense of what you want, what’s holding you back, and what your next step might be.

No obligation. Coaching doesn’t automatically lead to trip planning. Some people move into Travel Design with me. Others feel confident planning on their own. And some simply gain clarity about what they need, which is valuable in itself.

Who Travel Coaching Is For

Travel coaching is for you if:

You feel drawn to travel but aren’t quite ready to plan yet

You’re navigating a life transition and wondering if travel could help

You’re considering solo travel for the first time and want support working through fears

You know you want something more from life but aren’t sure what that looks like

You want to feel prepared and confident, not anxious and overwhelmed

You value thoughtfulness and intention over rushing into decisions

If any of these resonate with you, coaching might be exactly what you need.

What Makes This Approach Different

The SPARK Framework isn’t about pushing you toward a destination. It’s about helping you discover what you truly need.

It’s rooted in my own experience of navigating loss, transition, and transformation through travel. I know what it’s like to feel uncertain, to question whether you’re ready, to wonder if travel is the right answer.

And I know what it’s like on the other side. The confidence, the clarity, the sense of coming home to yourself.

That’s what I want for you.

This approach blends lived travel experience with thoughtful conversation. It creates a calm, nonjudgmental space where you can explore what travel means to you and how it can support this chapter of your life.

There’s no pressure to plan before you’re ready. There’s no judgment if you decide travel isn’t the right step right now. There’s just support, clarity, and belief in what’s possible for you.
